10 Consequences of Blasphemy.[a] The son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel, and this son of the Israelite woman got into a fight with an Israelite man. 11 The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the name of the Lord and cursed. They brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 They put him under guard until the will of the Lord might be revealed to them.

- Leviticus 24:10 This story of an incident that occurred in the wilderness not only shows that blasphemy must be punished but also provides an opportunity for recalling the law of talion (Deut 19:21), although this passage does not properly belong in this liturgical context. This severe legislation represented progress for society in that period, since it prevented excessive vendettas. See Ex 21:18-26. But the Gospel will go further (Mt 5:38-43).
